Harth in "In Art We Trust — Money In Art In Money"

Harth featured in the book In Art We Trust – Money In Art In Money

“In Art We Trust — Money In Art In Money”
By Daniel Masullo
Page Count: 398, Size: 28,0 x 21,8cm / 11,0″ x 8,6″
Format: Swiss Brochure Binding, 3 different papers
Publication Date: 2016
ISBN: -
Published by -

My work, Currency Work is featured in this new book!

»In Art We Trust« addresses modern artists and pieces of art, which incorporate legal tender as coins, bills, credit cards, likewise representations thereof as artistic material.

This so called money-art ranges from the mere integration of the particular worthless material money as metallic coins, colorful paperstrips or plastic cards into aesthetic processes such as paintings, installations, performances, to scientific discourses on ephemeral questions about debt, economics, and the dynamics of the art market.

In front of the backdrop of superficial sensationalist reports on the correlation between money and art,

this book ought to illuminate the occurrences of the tremendous record sums paid for artworks on the market.

Simultaneously it presents notorious artists and remarkable artworks that deal in the same context but were not broadcasted as widespread as those excessive pieces of modern art which go under the hammer of the most exclusive auction houses.

In four thematic chapters numerous paintings, sculptures, object and performative acts from the field of urban, digital and especially avant-garde art were showcased und put up for critic discourse on monetary occurrences in the contemporary art scene.

This topic gets thematically round off by two essays by art historian Dr. Max Haiven and art critic Nicole Zepter along interviews with (money) art collector Dr. Stefan Haupt and renowned gallery director Bruno Brunnet (Contemporary Fine Art, Berlin) as well as an portrait on the concept artist Sebastian Siechold.

Every Person I Know And Every Person I Don't Know

Postcard invitation

Every Person I Know And Every Person I Don’t Know
Website Launch
September 2012

EveryPersonProject.com

Announcing the launch of Every Person I Know And Every Person I Don't Know.

A new time-based participatory art work until forever.

When I was younger, I would frequent the local Photo Booths to take self-portraits. Throughout high school and my studies at university I would seek out these rare photo booths. Sometimes just for a self-portrait sometimes a portrait with a friend and one time, I took a portrait with a complete stranger.

Over the years photo booths have become more scarce. Sure there are many digital photo booths but not many old school photo booths that use real chemicals and the film development process.

In the late 2000’s Facebook was introduced and everyone has a digital camera in their smart phones. I witnessed people uploading their digital photos to social networking sites and they had the ability to delete the photos right away or alter them to make them look old.

This got me thinking. I missed the old school photo booth portrait. The commitment to the object. If one is unhappy with the strip of 4-photos they must destroy an actual object. It's not just the deletion of pixels. I miss the captured moment in time. I miss the intimate time spent with someone in the close quarters of the booth. I miss the moment of conversation and the unique experience.

In early 2012 I decided to start taking photo booth portraits with all my friends, for my archive, for art, for Facebook. That led to everyone I'm connected with on Facebook. I admit, I am 'friends' with people on Facebook that I've never met in person. It's an art thing. It's a New York City thing.

That was a starting point. As I began to reach out to people I normally would not have met, I realized I wanted to take this project further. I want to take a photo booth portrait with everyone. With every person I know and every person I don't know.

A lot of my art works are time based. And this one is no exception. At first I thought this would be a life-long project. Then I realized I didn't even want to put that limit on it. So, this project will go on forever. How? Well, there are other people named “David Harth.” And after I die, another person named “David Harth” can continue this project. As long as a “David Harth” poses in the photo booth portrait the project can continue forever.

This photo booth portrait project finally got a name “Every Person I know and Every Person I Don’t Know” and I realized another component to the project, The Editions. If you pose with me, you have the option to get an exclusive art work edition.

That’s how this project came about. I hope perhaps you'll be up for taking a photo booth portrait with me? Contact Me.

The end result of this project is this website. Granted, there is no ending. I’ll be also posting photos on Facebook. At this time I have no further plans for this project other than its virtual presence and the actual photos that reside in my archive and the editions.

Mystery Edition #1 Revealed!

Mystery Edition #1: Thinkway #111112200011

Announcing the first Mystery Edition in an edition of 30.

This was the first mystery edition released in early 2012. Before the edition was revealed, one could purchase the work at a lower pre-release price. After the work is revealed, the price was higher. This first Mystery Edition was an edition of 30 relief prints made from a brass plate. It was new Thinkway drawing and was a transatlantic print in collaboration with Warren Editions in Cape Town, South Africa. This drawing is also unique in that I have applied new rules and regulations to how I draw the lines. While one may see a relationship between this drawing and other drawings in my Thinkways series, this drawing is the FIRST to have a distinct set of rules applied to it. The Mystery Edition #1 was first available in December 2011 and was revealed in May 2012. The pre-release price was lower if purchased before April 1st, 2012. The edition price increased after an image of the art work was made public.

I AM WALL STREET

I AM WALL STREET

I AM WALL STREET

After many years of not stamping messages on currency, in October 2011, I released the “I AM WALL STREET” message in my series of “I AM” stamped messages on currency. The 'Occupy Wall Street' movement that sprung up recently inspired these.

“I AM” is an ongoing series begun in 1998 with “I AM AMERICA.” Harth stamps messages on currency, in various denominations, and then spends/trades the stamped currency to spread the message.

2011
Edition of 36

This project was first posted as a question as my status update on the social networking site Facebook on September 20th, 2011. The question I asked was "Who wants to have a threesome?" I then quickly commented with "This is a limited time offer. I will only do this three dozen times. Send me your address and I'll make it happen within a month!" What followed were various comments by people I was connected with. The first twelve people to respond and send me their address, indicating they wanted a threesome, got this limited edition silk screen print in the mail. For free. Then, via Facebook and my e-mail newsletter, I offered the next dozen for just $3.00 each. Followed by the next dozen for $30.00 each. The first dozen people had no idea what "Threesome" meant and where therefore 'rewarded' for their courage with a unique art work.

Want to have a threesome?
You can purchase one, limited availability.
