In July 2025 I turned 50. I made a new self-portrait with 8 of my favorite stuffed animals from childhood. I saved these stuffed animals for the past 40+ years specifically for this self-portrait.

I normally do not write a statement about my work. But I believe it may be helpful to include with this work.
“Self, 1975–2025” is a self-portrait where I confront the paradoxes of innocence, desire, vulnerability, exhibitionism, adolescence and aging. This portrait exists as a dichotomy between my child self and my 50-year-old adult self. I am one and the same, playful child and sexually expressive adult. As with many works of mine, this one does not shy away from themes of sexuality and humor.
In the portrait I am sitting with my childhood stuffed toy animals in my lap. I’m revisiting these early objects of comfort and imagination, that have signs of wear, were well loved, and were silent witnesses to my memories. I feel it is simultaneously uncomfortable, unguarded, joyful, playful and warmhearted.
In the portrait I am nude. I’m reclaiming something that I have been ashamed of most of my life. I’m questioning where the threshold lies between shame and shamelessness, between what we hide and what we need to reveal.
In the portrait I have an erection. My sexuality is an important aspect of my identity. My arousal is not about provocation because my physical body is not the sole factor to consider. My body is also the vessel of my memories and conflicts. Society has long kept sexuality secretive and permitted only by the young; and I wish to challenge this.
